Umayyad Caliphate 101 covers the entire period of the second Caliphate from the First Fitna, through the geographical peak of Muslim-ruled territories, until the Abbasid Revolution which saw the Umayyad re-establishment in Al-Andalus.
Discussions will include:

- The Second Fitna, Sayyiduna Hussain & the Tragedy of Karbala, Sayyiduna Abd Allah Ibn al-Zubayr and the Zubayrid Caliphate, The Siege of Makkah By the Umayyads
- The Caliphate of Abd al-Malik Ibn Marwan and Unification of the Caliphate, Umayyad Advances Into Anatolia & Armenia, the Destruction of Carthage & the Recapture of Kairouan – Establishing a Launchpad for Later Conquests of Western North Africa & the Iberian Peninsula, the Introduction of a Single Islamic Currency & Arabic as the Language of Bureaucracy

Live Course Schedule: Every Wednesday starting May 10th to June 28th, 2023 (1pm ET; 6pm British; 10am PST; 8pm Medina)
All sessions will be recorded and shared if you cannot attend live.
This will be a live course, held via Zoom. The full course will be ten hours of instruction over 8 weeks. Our instructor will be Abu Ayyub (E.K. Marulanda), an expert history guide and consultant on Islamic history based in Istanbul, Turkey. He is originally from the USA, but his journey to study and explore the living legacy of the Muslim world has seen him abroad for over a decade. Class size will be small to allow for participation and questions.
Certificate & Non-certificate tracks will be held in parallel. Certificate track will require students to pass a midterm & final examination in order to obtain credit.
Students can also choose to enroll in the standard non-certificate track with no testing.
What is the Certificate Program?
The Muslim Legacy Islamic History Certificate is a for-credit version of the class that includes testing in addition to the course study. Students must successfully complete 27 course credits. Courses are drawn from a list of approved courses offered by Muslim Legacy; each course is typically 3 credits.
Can I place this on my resume?
All students who complete the certificate may list this on the professional and educational development section of their resumes.
